Our Crazy Week

Last week was spent recovering from the week before! We had been doing so well this winter as far as sickness goes. Abby was plugging along. She had some pretty huge asthma problems October, November, December and January. We had a ton of testing done because after her attack at the end of October she just wasn't bouncing back. She was having a lot of problems and seemed to also be having some scary side effects from a couple of the steroids.

So, the first week of January we had a massive amount of bloodwork done and several x-rays. The doctor was ruling out Juvenille Arthritis and some auto-immune issues.  We actually managed to meet our deductible for the year already :(. Good and bad. Good because we are done for the most part and bad because we shelled out a lot of cash in just two months.

Almost all of Abby's blood work came back normal. There were just a couple of things that were off that we are looking into a little more. That left us a little confused as to why she was having such a hard time getting back to normal. Appointments were made with new specialists and we waited and waited to get in. Finally in February we saw a new pulmonologist who is supposed to be really good here locally. I told him some of my concerns with her current medication and he took her off a couple and switched doseages on another.

Well, long story kinda short...

She started having trouble last Friday night in the middle of the night. We gave her a couple of treatments at home that were doing nothing at all. Jeremy took her to the ER early Saturday morning and texted me soon after that the doctors were very concerned and I got myself together, got my Mom to watch the others and headed out. When I got there her oxygen was low, her heart was racing and she was working so hard to breathe. They admitted her and treated her for the next 24-hours.

We checked in with our pediatrician on Monday and he and I had a very good discussion about Abby and her plan to get better and stay well. She stayed home from school all week and on Wednesday her teacher stopped by with a balloon and card from all the kids. What a fun treat for her!! She felt so special.

As I talked to her doctor (who has a child with a chronic illness), I realized that sometimes it really is what it is and you just have to cope. That was a good thing for me. I am always trying to fix it; take her to the next doctor; find the newest treatment. Not that anything is wrong with that, but sometimes I just need to do what has to be done for now. Worry about today. You know?

So, we got Abby home and that same day B started coughing so hard he was puking and wheezing. We  took him in on Monday (his birthday) and they started him on treatments. He kept getting worse so I called Tues and Wednesday. I ended up pulling him out of bed Wednesday night and taking him to Urgent Care for a 3 hour visit. His oxygen was low and he was needing treatments. He ended up at the ER and then was admitted for RSV. Good grief! I did love the time spent cuddling with her and caring for him. It was some good bonding time, but I think I would rather do it another way or at least in another place :).

So, things have been hard lately, but I am happy to report that my little people have turned a corner and are doing well!
